In the asylum Joseph Snorquel is brought back to sanity by a letter from Charlotte, in which she asks for help in locating Dorothy. He resolves to escape and consult his friend, Prof Wolff who he thinks might know the location of the cave. An opportunity presents itself: Charlotte’s Mama and Col. Nancarrow are to lead the inmates in a music therapy session. Whipping the band into a frenzy with his Marimba, Snorquel engineers a daring escape, assisted by Charlotte's fat mama. As alarm bells ring the Colonel is seen laughing ghoulishly. Other bells ring across the valley in answer - Snorquel is on the run. He starts out across the salt march, making for the observatory and Prof Wolff.
lyrics
"Your waxy faced Mama shrieked and growled, dancing insanely to the pounding of Colonel Nancarrow’s fevered pianola. The mongrel inmates joined the throng and the clatter of obscene crotala punctuated the ceaseless ululations of baying and bellowing that broke upon my quivering ears like waves of a noxious sea of bitumen."
